Benayoun moved a fraction too early and is caught offside.

4 minutes: Short free kick, Maicon to Agbonlahor. Agbonlahor with the ball at-feet, as he looks to take-on his man. Agbonlahor with the ball. He looks up, tries to steer his shot into the corner of the net, but Reina is his equal as he gets a strong palm to the shot and pushes it around the post. Fine one-handed save by Reina!

6 minutes: Arteta delivers a corner into a crowded penalty area, with Davies among a clump of players. Corner blocked by Kuyt, but at the expense of another corner.

7 minutes: Arteta with the corner. It's angled at the back post, towards Toni. GOAL! Toni off to a flier early doors, as he turns, looks up and floats a speculative shot past the unready Reina!

8 minutes: Gerrard kicks off to Alonso. Alonso in possession. He plays a simple short pass to Benayoun. Benayoun keeps it simple, passing to Gerrard. Gerrard in possession. He plays a simple short pass to Benayoun. Benayoun runs on to the ball. He has a go at the defender, pushing the ball past him and then running on to it. Benayoun with the ball and he tries to take on Maicon. Maicon stands his ground, as the ball rolls over the line, off his shin, for a throw-in.

11 minutes: Kuyt contests that long throw-in, taken by Benayoun. Kuyt with the ball and he tries to take on Vermaelen. Vermaelen stands his ground, as the ball rolls over the line, off his shin, for a throw-in.

12 minutes: Kuyt urges his team mates forwards. It looks like it's going to be a long-bomb, perhaps to Pennant? As expected, the cross is of the highest quality, as Pennant whips it in towards Alonso. The ball should be cleared but Alonso nips in, taking the ball off the toes of the defender, before stabbing it home - Alonso is so sharp in these situation! GOAL!

13 minutes: Arteta kicks off to Elano. Neat interplay, as Elano plays a short pass to Agbonlahor. Agbonlahor distributes possession to Young. Young runs on to the ball. He looks around and, seeing nothing else on, decides to have a pop. Reina confidently lets it go, as it drifts a few yards wide.

15 minutes: Reina directs the goal kick long, in the direction of Benayoun. Maicon reads the game well and takes the ball off Benayoun. He keeps it simple and plays the short pass to Agbonlahor. Good turn, as Agbonlahor leaves his man for dead and breaks into space. Agbonlahor's fine run has taken him close to the byline. With team mates in the box, he chooses to shoot, blasting his effort into the side netting - that was a waste of a promising position!

17 minutes: Arbeloa receives the short goal kick from Reina. Direct football, as Arbeloa decides to try and hit Torres early. Vermaelen goes through the back of Torres to get the ball. The referee blows for a foul, but there's no card, which leaves Torres's team mates incredulous - the crowd are going nuts too! Torres is receiving some on-field treatment by the physio. Play is restarted with a free kick in a dangerous area.

19 minutes: Riise uses the set piece to attempt a pass to Gerrard. Gerrard, with the ball, fires in a speculative shot. Easy save for Carson. Carson hugs the ball to his body with one arm, while making 'calm down' motions with his other arm. Carson controls the ball and then attempts a long pass into the area occupied by Agbonlahor. Agbonlahor in the box. He takes a shot - that's blocked on the line by Carragher, who swiftly clears the ball out of the box, towards Gerrard. Gerrard with the ball and moving at speed. His marker simply can't keep pace with Gerrard as he easily outstrips his man and runs into a bit of space. That mazy run deserves an appropriate reward and Gerrard delivers, firing his shot past an exposed Carson. GOAL! Gerrard made no mistake!

22 minutes: Arteta kicks off to Elano. Possession quickly passed-on from Elano to Agbonlahor. Good control by Agbonlahor, as he fashions the space to play a pacy cross into the danger area, near Carew. Thumping connection from the cross, but that header flies narrowly over the bar. Did Reina get fingertips to it? No matter, a goal kick has been awarded.

24 minutes: A punt down the field from that goal kick, by Reina to Benayoun. Benayoun tries to take on Maicon, but Maicon stands his ground and makes a clean tackle. Maicon, in possession, distributes the ball to Arteta. Arteta with the ball but under pressure. He tries to play it simply but he's sold Toni slightly short with that pass. Carragher on Toni. Toni appears to have fallen awkwardly and Carragher does the decent thing, putting the ball into touch so that Toni can receive some treatment. After a quick wipe-down with the magic sponge, Toni is ready to go again.

26 minutes: Carew restarts the match with a simple throw-in to Bouma. Bouma moves quickly into an attacking position, before lifting his cross towards Toni. Carragher under the ball. He hasn't heard the call from his goalkeeper and puts it out for a corner.

28 minutes: Arteta takes a quick short-corner to Bouma, changing the angle of the play. Bouma comes up on the overlap and whips in a pacy and accurate cross towards Young. Young meets the cross first time and perhaps meets it too well, as his volley blazes over.

29 minutes: Reina plays a short goal kick to Riise. Riise distributes possession to Alonso. Alonso finds Benayoun with a simple pass. Benayoun with the ball at his feet and in a bit of space. He looks up, sees the movement of Torres in the box and delivers a peach of a cross. That's one for the collector's book, as Torres scuffs his shot and sends that volley wide!

32 minutes: Carson lumps the ball upfield, towards Agbonlahor. Carragher with the interception - he read that move so well! Carragher brings the ball forward and picks out Torres with a lovely 40-yard pass to-feet. Torres, with the ball, fires in a speculative shot. Easy save for Carson. Carson takes a quick breather. He urges his team mates up-field. Good distribution by Carson to Bouma. Bouma in possession. He plays a simple short pass to Agbonlahor. Agbonlahor runs on to the ball. He looks around and, seeing nothing else on, decides to have a pop. Reina confidently lets it go, as it drifts a few yards wide.

35 minutes: Reina restarts play by tapping it short to Carragher. Poor distribution by Carragher, leaving Alonso with plenty to do. The ball is with Arbeloa, after the short pass from Alonso. Misplaced pass by Arbeloa as it rolls out for a throw-in.

37 minutes: Short throw taken by Young to Maicon. Composed possession football, as Maicon passes to Arteta. Arteta spots the movement of Toni and tries to thread a through-ball to him. Intercepted by Carragher. He then pumps it long, into the approximate vicinity of Alonso. Neat interplay, as Alonso plays a short pass to Pennant. Fine run by Pennant, as he skips past one challenge and then breaks through another. The defender needs to look-sharp here, as he is attacked by Pennant, who has the ball at his feet. Penetrating through-pass, as Pennant picks out Torres. Fine run by Torres and a calm finish too, as he slots the ball past Carson on the run - GOAL! Surely that has to be the last significant action of the half?

42 minutes: Arteta kicks off to Elano. Good passing and movement, as Elano passes short to Arteta. Arteta on to Agbonlahor. Agbonlahor breaks forward and begins winding up a shot. Agbonlahor badly miscues his shot, but it has ricocheted off the defender and perfectly into the path of Young! Young with the ball and he tries to take on King. King stands his ground, as the ball rolls over the line, off his shin, for a throw-in.

44 minutes: Carew takes that throw-in short to Elano. Elano makes a bit of space. He decides to go long, aiming for Toni. Toni uses his strength well to hold up the ball. Not seeing any support, he decides to have a go at the defence and bundles his way past the first man. With half-a-yard of space, Toni slams his shot past Reina before the covering defender can get across - good GOAL from a muscular bit of play!

46 minutes: Gerrard kicks off to Alonso.
